Burl indeed is a better material to use imo because it doesnt have those nasty pits and holes as traditional cork has these days.
If supply of cork will run out so bad that we need to seek for alternative materials. Then you should use birch bark as I use already at some of my rods (like to one at this picture). That supply will last :)

Burl cork handles seem to be picking up steam in the custom world.
They sure look nice, though I wonder if we'll see a synthetic cork replacement become popular as good cork grows harder to find...
I can't stop looking at that picture. I don't know what I want more: the rod, the reel or the fish.
