Rod Building - Part 16: "back back forth and forth"

My rod building project is going like a dance. I replaced the big ugly stripper guides with a pair of shiny, tiny chromed ones.

Removing guides is simple. What you need is a sharp knife, steady hand, and some acetone to clean the blank.

Does this make a better rod?

How cares, we are after the looks here. Almost done...

Really enjoying following your progress so far but i have a little question? Compared to the cost of new rod, is it better value to build your own?

I agree with bigAndy, loving the story so far!

Looking forward to seeing the finished article!

Thanks Andy and Gareth!

Andy, this TFO Profession is still a bit cheaper than the original. Even with the more expensive guides.

This is only true if you don't count your hours.

Looks MUCH better!

I always hated the big black guides on rods from T&T (T&T's are EXPENSIVE rods for god sake!) and TFO (lot cheaper).

Interesting post on changing stripper guides. I also like your photography close ups of the wraps. Looked at some of your work with cane. that's a discipline I don't do now and don't plan to do. But I enjoy seeing other buiders' work online.
The post from thebigandyt about whether building your own is better value is a question I get often. While it actually can be a value, that is not the reason I use when I encourage people to try the craft. If anglers want a low-end rod, building won't save them any money. If they want to build on a quality blank with quality components, they might be surprised at the cost comparison.

Fran is right. With the low end rods, custom rod building doesn't save money. But you can make it custom.

since making that post i've started tying my own flies. It is definatly cheaper to buy them once man hours and materials are taken into account. But the amount of pride i felt catching a big browny on one was priceless. Now, I'd imagine rod building would have similar positives.
